It is a perennial officinal herbaceous plant of the Plantaginaceae family. The plants vary in height from 20 to 50 cm. The roots are secondary (thin almost capillary and twisted) from a woody and enlarged rhizome. The leaves are all in a basal rosette with a spiral arrangement and are persistent throughout the year.
